From the moment I first saw Olivia Wilde play "13" in the TV series House, where she played alongside the truly brilliant, Hugh Laurie, I knew she was headed for the big, big screen. Although stunningly beautiful and supremely talented, Olivia Wilde is one of those actresses who seems to have both feet firmly on the ground and is a Hollywood actress for all the right reasons. Obviously highly intelligent, Olivia is very much the political activist and doesn't simply practise philanthropy, but works as a board member for Artists for Peace and Justice. Her growing list of film credits include the excellent The Next Three Days, wjere Olivia Wilde played alongside Russell Crowe and Liam Neeson and then she offers the Tron: Legacy and Aliens & Cowboys where Olivia starred alongside Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford and then comes In Time where Olivia Wilde's co star is Justin Timberlake. 2012 promises to be a bumper year for films starring Olivia, with Butter due for release and Blackbird following closely with Welcome To The People and The Words hot on the heels. I genuinely watch with increasing anticipation as Olivia Wilde's star continues to rise steeply.

The greats of the silent movie period included Rudolf Valentino, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel & Hardy and a whole host of stars whose talents live on in the many characters they portrayed. Jean Harlow is perhaps the most successful of the stars who began their career in the silent era and whose star continued in ascendancy into the talkies. The western film genre has been the birth place for many great film stars, not least of which is the Great John Wayne. Blockbuster movies dominated the 80's and 90's with Silvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis competing for the title greatest action hero of them all... and then Matt Damon brought Ludlum's character Jason Bourne to life all too vividly and a whole new action hero was born.
And, although great women's roles are still all to rare, Vivien Leigh's Scarlet O'Hara in Gone With The Wind, Marilyn Monroe's Sugar Kane in Some Like It Hot, Grace Kelly as Tracy Lord in High Society, Michelle Pfeifer in the Baker Boys and Julie Roberts in Erin Brockovich are just a few great and memorable perfomances I have experience by women in the movies...
